Before the good humor of this lists gets eroded, let me say a couple of things that might bring some perspective to the discussion.
1. John is a really nice guy. I can say this without fear of contradiction because I know him, and I don't think he will mind my saying so. :-)
2. He does have a point (as he often does). I write Mac software books, too (even an AppleScript book recently), and I know from experience that it doesn't pay nearly enough to justify the effort it requires. So, we authors write them anyway, as a labor of love and a service to the AppleScript community. We hope you all appreciate it. And we hope to make a little money off the effort, maybe enough to buy a new computer once in a while. In my case, I once calculated my income from my books at about 12 cents per hour.
3. So, when people complain (as many often do) that the price is too high, we can get a little miffed, at least for a little while.
4. We all know that many in the community find it difficult to buy all of the Mac and AppleScript things they would like to have. So, we generally try to charge as little as we can and still feel OK about our decision to spend the amount of time and effort we put into what we create. We're sorry if some still can't afford it, but we have to try to strike a balance.
By and large, I think it would be a good thing (a) if people exercised restraint when they feel like criticizing the prices charged for software books and software -- especially in a specialty area like AppleScript -- and (b) if people exercised restraint when they feel like responding in kind.
