Thanks to the tip shane.. yeah.. ahem.. would have been a good place to start. After seeing some examples though, I don't think it's what i really need. From what I could tell, expanding the view shifts the items up (like a finder window displaying icons), I'd like the grid to remain static but expand either out, or down.. A little hard to explain I guess..

I also am still struggling to understand converting cocoa to ASObjC. and the example I found was Cocoa.
