Apple User Group Bulletin - January 18, 2006
......................................................................
Dear User Group Leader,
Happy New Year!
This year started off with a bang in San Francisco. From the best User
Group University in memory, to the Macworld keynote, to seeing old
friends and making new ones, it was a week to remember.
Of course, not all of the fun was in San Francisco. Groups everywhere
are working to help their communities and getting together to help
their members. Sometimes they just meet to have fun. Who says January
is a slow month? Read on to find out what groups are up to.
Wishing your group well in 2006,
The Apple User Group Advisory Board

1] - News To Use: Help for Your Group's Locator Information
........................
Your group's Ambassador is the primary contact for communication with
Apple. Often, a group does not know who their listed ambassador is.
Often, an unexpected change of ambassador means a lost login name or
code for Apple's User Group Locator.
Finding an answer is easy but not always obvious. If your group needs
this information, simply send a request to email@hidden and
your information can be sent to the current ambassador.
Send for info.

1] - Working Together: Borys and MacWoburn Help Out After Katrina
........................
After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, P.A.M. Borys, president of
MacWoburn, contacted groups in storm-affected areas and put out a
nationwide call to match computers with those in need. To date, some
70 computer donors have been matched with local user group members who
have pledged to distribute these computers, without charge, to those
in need.
In the course of setting up the program, MacWoburn became the sister
group to The Southern Mississippi Macintosh User Group; both were
interviewed by news sources and Terry Pollard made a short movie.
Is your group benefiting your wider community?

2] - Working Together: NPMUG hosts Pogue and Benefits Center for Hope
........................
The North Pittsburgh Macintosh User Group (NPMUG) is once again
helping their community. On February 4, the group is hosting New York
Times technology columnist David Pogue, who is scheduled to be the
keynote speaker for their special Center for Hope benefit. Planned
events include David Pogue's Tiger secrets, songs, humor, good things
to eat and drink, a book signing, DJ and a silent auction. This is one
event you won't want to miss.

3] - User Groups at Macworld Expo
.......................
User groups had a full week of events at Macworld Expo in San
Francisco, starting with Monday's User Group University and continuing
through Friday's User Group Lounge session with the people at IDG who
produce each year's Macworld Expo.
In the coming weeks, we'll post some cool, fun and exciting pictures
on the User Group Advisory Board web site. Check back often to see
what went on. You're sure to recognize some familiar faces from around
the world.
Dan East of The Apple Association of User Groups (TAG Team) already
has pictures posted; does your group? Got some pictures or .Mac links
you'd like to see featured? Send 'em in!

4] - Thank You: Volunteers
........................
Every January, user group events at Macworld Expo bring things to do
and friends to meet, but the week does not happen by accident. Thanks
to the more than 150 volunteers and planning team members who spent so
much of their time to make the week so memorable. Thanks, too, to
Lorene Romero of NCMUG who contributed her time and effort when boxes
went astray. User group events at Macworld couldn't have happened
without these people and their hard work.
See the planning team.

5] - Thank You: Sponsors
........................
For User Group University and the other events at Macworld San
Francisco, sponsors provided products for raffle, presentations and
financial support. We could not put on UGU without their generosity.
Be sure to thank these companies that helped user groups get together
and spread the word.

6] - Milestones
........................
Turn on the "Way Back" machine. This month's milestones include groups
whose first meeting convened as long ago as January of 1977. Many have
a claim to be the first of their type and all have been around for
more than 20 years. Congratulations to some of our oldest groups!
