Lots of interesting comments on this topic.
A couple things to think about:
MUGs, like any other entity, have perfect opportunities to define
themselves during adverse conditions, including when vendors "flake out"
on them.
Passing judgement because someone doesn't show or cancels at the last
minute is a bit self-centered. Regardless of what you are told is the
"reason," you may never really know. Someone may have lost their job,
have a sick child, a death in the family, a cut in the budget, etc. (The
first and last seem to be increasingly familiar.)
Think about it from the other side: if you were the vendor who had to
cancel, what will your reaction be? If you're treated with respect and
understanding, you'll break your neck to get back to that group, or
possibly make up for the cancellation by sending product, give-aways,
etc. If you're berated and condemned, you'll wonder why you were ever
going to bother to go out in the first place...and you certainly won't be
going back.
It is both human and natural to see things from your own point of view
which can easily lead to negativity. It is much better for your MUG and
your ongoing relations with the vendor if you can see things from theirs.
And of course, as was suggested, if you're a MUG leader worth his or her
salt, you ALWAYS have an emergency meeting topic at the ready.
