And if you ask me, the benchmarking test results we're pretty pointless.

Nevertheless we need to look at this critically and see what it is telling us.

The tests they ran were not maybe the "best" tests to run. The Mac was always going to lose in the quake 3 test - it's just a fact. It is odd, however, the results they got were about the same for the 15" iMac that I get for my Pismo. I'm wondering if they weren't using the Cocoa version of Quake or something.

The Javascript test is inconclusive but was cooked. It's certainly not going to be mattering to anyone that actually cares about web browsing but people, including your members, have to have this explained. Javascript is common on the web but for most applications it's just for generating pop-up windows.

The bootup time test is also very suspicious. Firstly my Pismo doesn't take that long to boot up so there's something cooky there - I'm wondering if they had auto-login turned off and therefore required someone to type in a password - a second issue is that when the cursor on Windows changes from an hourglass to an arrow, the system has NOT finished booting up. My current work PeeCee takes another two minutes to finish starting up once it has given me the arrow cursor. They do define what they mean about a "usable condition" and it's incredibly suspicious.

Remember also the different specifications of the machines. The low end iMac at $1299 has a 40 GB hard drive and a CDRW. The low end Gateway Profile has a 20 Gb hard drive and a CDROM and also doesn't have a modem (though it does have 10/100 ethernet). Adding those to the configuration puts the price up to $1159 and you still only have a 1.7 GHz Celeron. Also, at that price you only get Works and Encarta and none of the extra software bundles or external speakers. You also have to use Windows XP. Bleah.
