One thing I really appreciate from vendors is real support that
translates into revenue for the group.
Things like books and software for review are a great help. When we get
two copies of something, we give one to a member for review, and we use
the other copy as a raffle item or auction item. This is really an
important source of income for our group. It enables us to do things
like rent a nicer facility for our meetings, and serve snacks too. I
can't believe how popular the idea of having finger food is at
meetings. Anyway, we'd not be able to do that on just the income from
membership fees.
But thanks to generous vendors, we keep our members happy and don't go
broke in the effort.
By the way, Apple is conspicuous in their lack of this kind of support.
It's like pulling teeth to get even a free copy of an operating system
once in a while. I think it's a real shame Apple shows such lack of
appreciation to the very core of the people responsible for keeping the
company alive.
Donating copies of Apple software would cost Apple very little in real
terms, and would be a gigantic help to user groups.
I've been involved in Mac user groups for way over ten years, and I
don't ever remember Apple being overly generous to user groups. But I
can't tell you the last time Apple donated anything of any value to us.
This is ridiculous, in my opinion.
Oh, yeah, I think i do remember; about two years ago Apple sent us a
box of flip-flops. No kidding, flip-flops, just the thing to send to
Alaska. You could check that with Garth, if you can find him.
