I sit down this morning and read all of the reaction, posts, etc on
whether Apple should, could or will support User Groups. I happen to
know Peter and his life does involve the Mac in more ways than you or I.
So he sees it from more than one side. And yes, he gets heated
sometimes, but it's the passion and there are many ways to cool down and
ease the anger. It surprises me how a post gets read.
So I happen to agree with all of you. Apple has in the past and
continues to support some groups. There are too many groups that ask
and end up without. It has always happened - internationally, its
almost impossible.
I also believe that Apple misses an opportunity by not bringing User
Groups deeper into the plan. There is The UGAB and UG Regional
Liaisons. Chuck and the others have been working to bring resources,
product and services - but unless you are plugged in, you will mostly
see the results at UGU or programs in the lounge. The last time I was
at Macworld, I ran a program that opened up the whole issue of
international support. UGs are in every community and if they are
involved in the community, then that could be an opportunity for Apple.
Each group needs to decide how much the will involve themselves and what
resources they need or can bring to the table. Right now dBug in
Seattle has money in the bank, and holds quarterly main meetings, but it
no longer is involved in the community or events the way it was in the
past. They made the decision and I respect it. But the downside is
that they cannot get some of the benefits, even here, that you receive.
They still have over 300 members and the Saturday Open House picks up
new members every week. That's what they decided to do. It's a choice.
Now I still post here because I do see the many sides and the more we
talk and understand, the better voice we develop individually and as a
group. This discussion needs to continue among ourselves, our groups
and with Apple. Things are going on out there. I am developing a
concept for an all day Education Program that would take place
regionally at a major University/College, bringing resources and tools
to every level of Education, something every attendee can take back and
use tomorrow (one of my personal rules: always give them something they
can take home and use). Will it see daylight? That up to more than me.
That's how I work.
Now my wish is that we all take a moment to truly appreciate this
resource right here. It's been a great service to leaders - and
disagreement is part of the equation. I am still unemployed. That's
not my choice. I cannot go to Macworld SF, even if someone asks. So
this is my outlet. I read everything that comes here. And when I can
get more involved, I will.
Here's being thankful to be alive and well and with family and friends
this holiday season. We should all be very thankful for what we have
today. God bless us everyone.
David
