Cheers Macbeth!
I think you've jumped in with a very timely thought among all the
controversy flying about. I've been faced with needing to answer to
questions from my own group in a way that will build up, encourage and
bring enthusiasm to the group. That "full objective perspective from all
our members" isn't always easy to do, but I find it very rewarding.
I truly believe in your domino effect of efforts -> performance ->
predictable outcomes -> value & enjoy the outcomes. I've seen it
happening in our MUG over the last 12 months. I've been told "you can't
do that", somehow that urges me forward, gives me energy and allows me
to see the results.
Without enthusiasm, the fire will burn dim. I think it's important that
now while a lot of folks are asking questions & recovering from the
shock of "free" to "lets make ends meet", leaders try to keep their
heads above the waves, and protect the enthusiasm, the ideas, the
dreams. In the long run, it will make the MUG stronger and healthier.
I think an overall short term goal should be to help people adapt to
change. No one likes it. People have griped about every major (and not
so major) change in the computing world as it's come along. Many in our
MUG have had a really rough time adapting to OS X from earlier versions.
We don't hammer, we answer questions, provide round table discussions &
show the ease and benefits - I've seen more than 1 light come on. We're
faced with a lot of questions - new features in Jaguar, not an upgrade,
a new version - get used to Apples new numbering system for versions;
.mac - how the benefits will outweigh the cost, and are the benefits
worth the cost. It would really help me if as leaders we could focus on
how we will help our members adapt to where Apple is going.
For long term goals, it would help if somehow Apple could give us even
hints of what might be coming down the pipes so we as leaders could
prepare and brace ourselves. For an example, .mac - ok, good logical
change - you can't expect the great services forever to be free. We were
all blind sided with it last week, and leaders and members had to deal
with the shock together. Could we have provided better support to our
members had we known about this ahead of time (non-disclosure agreements
ok with me), been able to plan and have more ready answers, or even just
be a stable rock when our members were coming with shocked looks and
questions. Luckily I've got another week till our monthly meeting, so
I'll have a chance to gather my ideas and answers for the group. I know
the questions are coming, the answers will be the most important part.
Kudos & Cheers for looking up and posing the questions we need to be
looking at!
Cheers!

easier just being a membership holder with the only expectation being
of attending the meeting and nothing else.
Many of us choose to volunteer the deeper waters of officership because
we see so much that can be done to continue to improve things for the
whole. So...some things that I see MUGs and Apple should be thinking
about in support of what we do and what we can offer:
-If you believe that ones efforts affects performance...
-If you believe that ones performance determines predictable
outcomes...
-If one believes that one values those outcomes...
...then one should believe that one's motivation will expend
maximum effort.
We communicate our enthusiasm, promote cooperation, inspire others to
reach out to meet those expectations every time we share our love of
our Macs and tell others how great this computer is in comparison.
As user groups, what are some long term goals that we should be
thinking about? and in conjuction with the symbiotic relationships that
we have because of, or with, or without Apple? or short term goals?
