WASHINGTON APPLE PI ON THE USER GROUP REPORT
The new special edition of The User Group Report goes on location to the
Washington Apple Pi Computer Sale and Show to talk to a variety of
guests. The new president of Washington Apple Pi, Pat Fauquet talks
about taking over the largest physical group in the world, the challenges
that face her and their upcoming summer camps. Lorin Evans, the outgoing
president, touches on his distinguished career as Pi president and what
he'll still be doing with the Pi after passing the torch. David Ottalini
talks about the many benefits and projects that Pi provides, and the
history of the Computer Show & Sale. Finally, Dave Gruver, an attendee
scooped out of the crowd, confesses to blowing his budget on the deals at
the sale. You can listen here:

Hosted by Chuck Joiner, the User Group Report is the series of audio
interviews with people making news in the user group community.
USER GROUP ADVISORY BOARD CONDUCTS MUG LEADER FOCUS GROUPS
The User Group Advisory Board recently conducted the first in a series of
focus groups with MUG leaders. The first group discussed ways to get more
MUG leaders involved in communications channels and broader user group
initiatives, and resources that Apple could provide to help leaders
operate their groups more effectively. Participating in the discussion were:
* Nico Juber - Tufts Macintosh Users Group
* Betty Salmon-Wilk - Macintosh Users of Delaware
* Shaun Chu - MacChamp
These focus groups will allow individual MUG leaders to interact with the
User Group Advisory Board, Regional Liaison Team, and the Apple User
Group Program on a direct basis and provide feedback and recommendations
on a variety of designated topics. Learn more about the participating
leaders on the Focus Group page.

THE PASSING OF RODNEY O'LAIN
The Mac Observer has posted the sad news that Rodney O'Lain, the prolific
columnist for that site and many others, took his own life last weekend.
Rodney was an active MUG member and a thought-provoking advocate for the
Macintosh cause through his writing and his actions. We had the good
fortune to host Rodney as a guest in the User Group Lounge at Macworld
San Francisco 2001. The photo above is the one he provided for that
appearance. The session went fast...too fast. In person Rodney was as
engaging as in his writing, citing sources as diverse as Martin Luther
King and Star Trek. We parted company that day with a standing invitation
for a follow-up appearance the next time he was going to venture to Expo.
Unfortunately he never made it back. We'll miss his sharp wit and
willingness to say, in his own unique way, what others won't. Our
condolences go out to his family.
