Greetings Martin
I, as President of the Beijing Macintosh User Group, first extend my warm
greetings to you. (BeiMac is a new group formed only this year - member
count: 87 and counting.) In China, Mac usage is low but not nought (i.e. not
zero).
Few users I've been in contact with locally use it at home (I'm a noticeable
exception; three Macs crowd in my room) but Macs occupy 60% of the
publishing arena. Macs are also now being used in DV and Photoshop areas.
Beijing and Hong Kong are apparantly the most active Mac cities in China.
Shanghai outnumers Bejing in terms of AppleCentres (note: these are operated
by an Apple Authorised Retailer, but not Apple China itself), but Beijing
has nearly monthly Mac UG meetings. There used to be a colossal MUG in
Taibei but it disintegrated about a decade ago (from local sources) and two
or three dozen-member groups have, in the meantime, taken their place.
In Beijing there is an additional, local, loosely organised group called
MacFans Beijing. They do not appear to be in the UG database at
apple.com/usergropus and they often meet "out of the blue" or organise a lot
of seminars.
MacFans Beijing is mostly a group for locals, whereas BeiMac has members
from over a dozen nationalities. BeiMac is also the only Apple-recognised UG
in the city.
BeiMac does not currently charge for annual membership. I think neither the
Treasurer not me have any plans at this second about charging members in the
future. ;-)
BeiMac is featured on apple.com/usergroups in terms of an online listing (in
response to "how we find our new members"). BeiMac has also been included in
the community groups listings in "City Weekend" and "that's Beijing", two
magazines for the foreign expat community in Beijing. (I'm actually a
"member" of that community - a multilingual Swiss citizen with Chinese
background.)
Also, BeiMac has been featured in a Mac report by a fellow member and is
expected to be featured as a Community Feature in an upcoming edition of
"that's Beijing" magazine.
Although the Mac market share in China is a disappointingly low 0.2%, we're
sure we're here to make a difference. ;-)
Best regards,
Yan Feng
