Our MUG does not charge at all for any of our regular monthly meeting raffles,
but on occasion where the value of prizes might be on the high side we have
tried to limit the free raffle tickets just to paid-up members of the club and
not to guests. Overall, we have found that the administration involved in
trying to provide raffle tickets ONLY to paid up members is a bit of a hassle,
so normally everyone in the room gets a ticket.
On the other hand, I have paid a few visits to our local PC Users' Group and
they do have quite a regimen that their members have grown accustomed to.
There are always a couple of tables set up near the entrance which is where
members go to both get their free raffle prize ticket, first showing their
membership card to get it, AND also to optionally buy 50-50 draw tickets. I
think the way the PC club handles this so called "50-50" draw is that the
first person drawn gets the 50% all right, but then they draw a second ticket
and that person gets 25% of the pot, with the club itself retaining only the
last 25%.
At a recent meeting which our Mac club cosponsored with the PC group, the
meeting room rental for the night was $85.00 (Canadian), which was split 50-50
between the two clubs. So that was $42.50 each. But then the PC club turned
over to our Mac club half of the 25% they had taken in from their 50-50 raffle
draw, and that amount to $17.50. So in the end our club's share of the meeting
room cost for the night was only $25.00. I figure we can learn a few things
from these money-grubbing PC users!!
Hope this helps. Nice to hear from folks in Nova Scotia. That's where I was
born!!
