Great Installfest Everyone!
Thank you to everyone who attended. The combination of LINUX & Mac OS X
Users was more fun than a barrel full of MONKEYS!!! ;)
I think that everyone learned something great; I know I did and appreciate
Dorothy letting me play with her DP 533 running Mac OS X 10.2. If you
missed it, our play consisted of sharing how to use our computers better and
trying a few fun tricks like limiting the control panels & extensions in Mac
OS 9's Extension Manager to speed up the Classic Launch - and guess what?
It worked seamlessly and made launching Classic/Classic Applications super
fast.
If you have not made a limited extension set for Mac OS X that turns off all
the stuff that Mac OS X takes care of (like printing, firewire, usb, etc.)
you should because it really makes a big difference in your computers
performance and dramatically speeds up the launch of Classic!
It was also fun watching and learning more of the UNIX stuff and seeing Red
Hat Linux in action. Even neater was to see Yellow Dog Linux breathing new
life into some of the old beige Macs we had lying around!
If anyone wants a copy of Yellow Dog Linux 2.2 I have a few left over and
you can pick them up at our next meeting on September 19th when member Steve
Lee will give a talk about MIDI and show off (his) the great new Neolithic
Edzel of our time, a Dual Processor Tower Mac.
Yes, I have asked Steve if he will let us crack the case and take a look at
the new motherboard since none of us are allowed to see their innards at
CompUSA or the Apple Store in Raleigh and because many of you have been
clamoring to see the insides in person. I am hoping Steve will be
accommodating. Steve said he would think about this issue so lets all ask
nicely at the meeting and maybe he will say yes!
I am looking forward to seeing all of you there as we learn how to make
Music on the Mac, understanding how MIDI works, plus seeing this new Tower
Model in person. BTW if you know any Musician friends, invite them along so
they can see how wonderful a Mac is in person for musicians.
My very best,
Randy Marshall
