Our user group provides services to members that a "non-physical" group
could not. And these services are valued by most of its members. As
examples, we are an Internet Service Provider, we run weekly clinics to
fix members' machines, members get to meet in person, we have a wide
range of classes, etc. We are also online in a big way (and getting
bigger). Our Web-based version of the old BBS is an invaluable
resource for members, without pop-up ads, spam, or message-posters of
unknown reliability. We have members all over the world, even if most
are in our local area. We have produced a series of CDs which have
been very popular with users and other user groups world-wide. All of
these entail expenses that must be borne by the membership fees and
other user fees, along with income from sales of CDs and class fees.
In spite of the value of these services, it is difficult for us to keep
members and pay our bills, if what we provide is available for "free"
elsewhere. Of course, what appears to be free at one time may turn out
not be so in the course of time. But in the meantime groups like ours
do struggle to keep afloat. We do need to offer services and
opportunities (such as software and hardware discounts) not available
without user group membership.
