Passing this along in case anyone else finds themself in the same
boat....
Got together tonight with our club's Apple Ambassador to arrange for the
free dot-Mac account for our MUG, and to ensure that we were able to
utilize the email address that we have hitherto had associated with our
original free iTools account.
Apple Ambassador had the scoop on gaining a free dot-Mac account, while
I had the password for our original iTools account.
It was not until I got to his home and read the literature he had
received that I learned that it is not a fast process to get the free
dot-Mac account. He has to logon to his Learn & Earn account, complete
an online course about .mac, complete an online exam and score at least
80%, and THEN wait what could be a week or more to receive an electronic
"key" which qualifies him to apply for a free dot-Mac account for our
club.
To make matters worse, our Ambassador managed to get himself into an
endless "DO loop" at the logon screen. He tried several times to get a
temporary password, use that to set up a new unique password, only to
then be blocked out of our account. He has sent an email asking for help
in straightening this out.
So, I wondered, what happens to our original iTools email account name
if we don't get our new free dot-Mac account set up before the end of
September deadline our iTools account expiry? I was all set to start
emailing questions when I found my answer on MacCentral ... turns out
that Apple will be deleting any information which old iTools account
holders have left on their Servers but the actual email account names
will be maintained indefinitely. This means that we can still "retrieve"
our current MUG email account name and apply it to our free dot-Mac
account even if we don't get all the i's dotted and t's crossed by the
end of September.
Hope this helps others.
