There used to be a user group here in NI a few years ago but they were
college-based and when the guy running it graduated the group died.
They didn't achieve much but they promised the earth and that left a
lot of people feeling cheated. I'm told they reached 25 members and
the person telling me made it sound like that was an achievement.
Two years ago we started up NiMUG and we've now got 160+ members. We
were an online group even though we're based in NI but we have started
having meetings on and off and we're taking a step to have monthly
physical meetings before the year is out. We still have a very strong
online community.
Is one better than the other? I'd have to say that I believe that
local, physical groups have much more potential because they can
address both sides and both needs. Online groups have the advantage and
disadvantage of being physically disparate and not tied to one location.
As a Mac user group in NI we get very little from Apple UK or Apple
Ireland in terms of support. The mainland UK guys aren't interested and
neither are the blokes down south (well, it's a different country down
there). We're independent, organise all of our own demos and our
canvassing has brought about the biggest change in the Mac world in
this region. Whereas we haven't had a Mac dealer for two years, we've
convinced one to open in Belfast. It's taken a lot of work as we had to
do the legwork for them but it's better than the current situation
where people have to go to a large PC chain to get outdated Macs, use
mail order or the Apple Store and there's NOWHERE to get your Mac fixed.
Anyway, congrats and condolences to Trish Huffman for the "List Mom"
appointment. I'm sure it'll bring belly laughs and temper tantrums :)
