What is your group doing? -Lorene
I do not run the drawing of my group. But when I came into the group, in
addition to the usual donations from software publishers, they traded
CompUSA for an ad in the newsletter. In the switch between printed
newsletter and the website, we have no ads for a bit. I was shocked at our
last meeting to learn that the raffle guy had been buying prizes at full
price. He bought a $30 book for $30 and that was just one of 9 prizes. I am
not sure we even took in enough to cover those costs and am not happy about
this. (I think I have to contact that CompUSA and make a rate sheet to try
to get the trade again.)
We're trying something new now. When I find great deals or rebate offers
(like OfficeMax's where things like 100 CD cases are free) I share the news
and a few of us buy them. Yes, the bar code will be missing on the prize,
but the prize was free or cheap and it's still a great prize.
When I have come to speak at various meetings, I've contacted the publisher
of my book or the software I've presented and arranged a copy of a book
and/or software, therefore bringing my own prizes as the presenter.
BTW, raffles are illegal or a ton of paperwork in California, so we have a
drawing, not a raffle. Every member gets one free ticket. No one needs to
buy one to have a chance to win.
