But the main idea is centralization. What Apple needs to do is build

(Well, I dont because I wasnt even born then) Well, its time to go
back to our roots.
You weren't there therefore you don't see the problems that these
cause. I used and administered XTerminals during the mid to late 90s.
These were true terminals - all processing was done at the server, only
the display was handled locally. It meant that you did share a
processor with multiple people and if the server went down then more
than one person was out of action (at least for the few minutes it took
to rehost the XTerminal).
This idea is present albeit in a limited and extremely unsuccessful
form in the Windows world and in a marginally more successful available
from SUN. If this concept is having pretty much zero success in the
rest of the world, is there any evidence to suggest it would be a good
thing for Apple?
Now, as a method of running a remote session it has some merit, if only
for the ability to use a really powerful machine to run some tasks -
but that's different to the deployment for the uses of terminals.
Software based Terminals like Citrix are somewhat better than the
hardware type but again - having no local processing power is a
liability more than anything. Especially when there's multiple people
using the server and it gets bogged down. My experience with them is
not 100% positive but I can see how they could be attractive in some
sectors.
It's possible that Apple is working on this. They have managed to split
the display in Panther so we can have multiple users logged into the
same machine on a graphical basis but frankly Quartz is very
display-heavy - it would be interesting to see what Apple does with
this. From an administration point of view I'd like this facility but
from a personal point of view I'd never buy a device that didn't have
local processing.
