Greetings...
The 7K ceiling on posts to this list prevents me from posting
the entire message. So, I urge you to contact me if you
want the full text for your members.
Yesterday, a close relative's identity was stolen on eBay.
The whole ordeal and the ensuing headaches of identity theft
has prompted me to write and once again urge everyone
to spread the word about online safety.
Not so much YOU. You guys already know better.
But if there's someone in your group or your field
of influence who doesn't know -- they will be the victims.
Folks, it's not a matter of "if" criminals will discover your
password -- but "when".
There have been expanded and more urgent warnings about
a new surge in online crime in the past few weeks. Particularly
during the holiday season when people let their guard down.
ALL user groups on this list should post warnings to your news
groups, discussion lists, newsletters and web sites -- and keep
hammering away at online safety.
This person used their cat's name as a password in an eBay account less
than a year old.
Sure, DUH! But that's all it took for a criminal to crack
into ebay, begin posting bogus items for sale and using the credit
card account. We may not have even discovered it had it not been
for an unwary user who emailed with questions about one of the
bogus offers. The relative called me and said "I've got this email
from eBay about a product I'm not even selling."
I knew at once what happened. I jumped on it and made calls to
contacts I've made through the anti-spam initiative and was able
to stop it before the real disaster could happen.
Most people won't be that lucky. Have you ever tried to contact eBay?
Just try. It's impossible.
I posted the full article to the UGN InfoManager's list, so if you
are subscribed there you'll get it. I plan to get it up in all my web
sites tomorrow.
If you want the full article you are surely welcome.
The more people who know how to protect themselves - the better
the world will be.
Thanks for reading...
Fred
