Interesting question. Most organizations charge more for non-members than
for members, yet mugs let non-members in free. I suppose that's in the
spirit of sharing the Mac. We encouraged people to join as a support to keep
the group going. We had an un-enforced policy that people could attend 2
meetings before joining. At each LAMG meeting and each Long Beach meeting,
we'd ask who was new, and wither who was not a member yet or who were
members. For the newcomers I'd ask how they found us. (Always good to know.)
Interestingly, the only person who made a big deal of our questions was a
guy who came to every general meeting, at least one chapter, and some SIGs
(about 4 per month), argued with the presenter most of the time, tried to
undermine the group, and was never paid/donated a penny. He said we asked
because we were trying to embarrass him into joining. That was never the
case. But I must admit that I wanted to charge about $100/meeting for him or
better, not let him it.
Back to the topic, I don't see anything wrong with charging for non-members.
Maybe inviting them to 2 meetings free, then charging 1/12 of the membership
fee per meeting (a bit over that), giving them admission but not member
benefits.
