There is also <http://www.ipodbattery.com> for 49.00
For what its worth, I'll share my experience with an iPod.
I had an iPod stop working one day right before that video hit. I charged it
and saw that it never stopped charging. Never said charged. Never turned on.
I tried to turn it on day after day, for all this time. I assumed the
problem was due to irregular use, as is often a battery case. I assumed
there was a battery reset. The info I found in the TIL didn't do the trick.
(I admit that after I while I did began to thing dead battery with all this
talk about it but I kept on asking around and didn't give up believing.)
Then an ACN friend found me another note he though was from the TIL but may
be from an ACN or Developer source. Yes, there is a reset built in. Two
simple steps. All fixed. I'm not sure if Apple is not revealing it because
there are many other things on the reset menu, or if I just keep failing to
find the public note. But it was easy and is built into the buttons. I've
asked my friend to pass me the tech note so I can share it with you
properly.
We will never know if those guys who did the video were
fully competent in their iPod handling. We will never know if a reset would
have worked because they tried and failed to replace the battery. And you
cannot say that's Apple's fault. I wonder if the genius bar staff knew about
the reset and tried the reset for the guy. But I wonder how many people had
the same not charging issue and have wrongly thought the battery dead,
jumping on the panic bandwagon.
Anyway, here's a story of a non-dead 10 gig iPod for you to share.
PS: In short, here's how it got fixed, although I'd be more comfortable
sharing the perfect note rather than my memory.
1) Plug in so there is power, either to non-sleeping Mac or to electric
piece.
2) Press the top and bottom button, see the Apple, release. This turns it
back on.
3) Press the 2 side buttons and the enter button so all 3 buttons across are
pressed. Yes, it's difficult to do. It does not have to be immediately when
you release from step 2; no rush. This gives you programming menus.
4) Select the Reset option. I think it was 2nd down. I forget which button
took me to it. Then you press the center enter button to select it. You'll
still see menus.
5) Unplug it and leave it on with this menu showing. It's in low power mode
now, and needs to drain until the screen is blank again.
6) Fully charge it. If the reset was successful you'll now see it tell you
it's charging and later it'll say charged.
Next step for that iPod is AppleCare because I believe in AppleCare or store
insurance for portable stuff.
