My apologies to all that Joe is airing feelings and internal issues
on the list that IMHO do not belong here. Private emails sent to
individuals should not be shared publicly.
The pardon to Trish does not excuse a violation of netiquette.
The above is as negative as I wish to get in this message.
I owe you all on this list an apology, as TRoU president and an
explanation to understand these unusual postings.
Joe Ferguson joined this list some time ago while on the TroU board
of Directors . He e mailed me and the other board members about the
User Group Offers which he read about on this list.
The tone of his post to my board seemed brash, to question.with some
tension, why offers were handled as we do in our club: (As we have
no secure organ, the offers are mentioned, listed on our list and in
our newsletter with all but the contact information;. for that, a
member simply emails , we confirm the person is a member and I
email the needed codes etc immediately).
That may have been a misunderstanding but that is what I derived from
his post to the board.
I wrote Joe privately , explaining and stating that we of TRoU
would continue to be careful with publicizing the offers to non
members.I felt and shared with Joe that, to some degree, he had
taken off on his own in joining this list and then seemingly
challenging and attacking how we handle User offers.
In fact, I checked with the then Apple user Group coordinator, Garr
et al and confirmed that we are honor bound to protect offers which
are intended only for user group members. I shared that with Joe and
we also discussed at a board meeting with understanding from board
members.
Our hope is soon, with our new web.master, to have a secure web area
in which user group offers can be fully published
Joe took umbrage at my requests of him as President and perhaps at
my management style. I am sufficiently old fashioned to expect that
people discuss issues privately before going to a larger audience and
that people work with and through leaders. There is a hierarchy in
groups, benign as they may be. Newsletter editors expect newsletter
issues be run by them, etc.
I thought we had settled the issues .Joe resigned from the board one
or two months later stating meetings are not for him but was very
willing to continue doing things for the group. Very recently I
invited him to handle the User Group offers area on our web site when
it is ready and he seemed pleased to do this.
I had, as alluded to above, mentioned to him in an email (never saw
his request for telephone conversation and he never called )
mentioned that I did not think the AUGD list was open for anyone to
join.
To my credit, indeed, until tonight I was under the apprehension that
this particular list was only for Presidents or Ambassadors or
similar- that was what I was given to understand when I first joined
the first inception of this list and had to identlfy myself and my
role in the User Group.
I belong to other organizations with limited access discussion groups
so the concept is not so strange. Indeed , many of the postings on
this list are addressed to User Group Leaders.Offers are posted here
and passwords - yet if anyone can sign up...
If I was wrong there, Ido owe Joe an apology for being concerned
that he had gone off on his own tangent in this respect.
However, he again has taken umbrage at what I thought was a quasi
humerous way to nudge him back onto our board. You want to be on the
leadership listserv? you are and want to be active to such a high
degree in the group to ? So, be part of the management team of the
group and not simply out there on your own!
That is what I hoped to accomplish .
My efforts backfired , I misjudged in this instance. but I have
learned a bit more about people management.
My apologies to all and to Joe, I did not mean to upset him or make
him feel pressured. Truly, administrative tasks , and directives
which is what boards and meetings and officers are all about, is not
everyone's cup of tea and often not for people who like to work
independently.
Thanks for listening y'all.
Barbara Passman
President
The Rest of Us TRoU and UCMUG Ambassador.
Sincerely
Barbara
