Hey All,
In preparation for Aug 02's Los Angeles area MUG Leaders Forum, I
quickly surveyed Apple's online locator for the number of MUGs in each
state, as well as Apple's retail page for the number of Apple Stores in
each state.

The purpose was to give L.A. area MUG Leaders some perspective as to
how L.A. area MUGs fit in to the bigger picture of the state of
California and the rest of the country. (We turn out to be more than
1/3 of all the groups in CA, and more groups than any other state.)
Also, since Apple's strategy for its Stores is to open them up in
more affluent shopping centers, and Mac users are supposedly more
affluent anyway, I was curious to see if there was any relation to the
number of MUGs in each state to the number of Apple Stores.
In preparation for Jan 03's Macworld Expo/SF User Group Booth (L.A.
area MUGs' Brochure for it), I quickly re-surveyed Apple's online
locator and retail page to update the that info, and was amazed at the
growth. Here are those numbers and a few comments.
Numbers.

Perspective.
In five months, total U.S. MUGs grew from 496 to 598 (21%), and Apple
Stores grew from 34 to 53 (56%)! States that saw the most MUG growth
were CA (16), MA (10), NY (9), and IL (8). Overall, 31 states gained
MUGs, only two lost a couple, and 15 states gained Apple Stores.
These numbers should also hopefully help states w/ one, two or three
MUGs get more support from us, the User Group Advisory Board, Regional
Liaisons and Apple because if any of these groups fold, Mac users in
those states will have no group to go to for help or support.
And when Apple announces its 1st Quarter results on Wed, Jan 15th,
maybe these numbers can add perspective. Of course we hope that Apple
posts a profit, and that these Stores did well over the holiday season,
but we can be understanding if Apple posts a loss.
Sincerely,
Doan Thiel Stafford *
