Tuesday night the Tyler, TX, UG watched Steve Jobs' keynote address. We
streamed it from the Apple website via a cable modem, passing through a
projector onto a screen. All went well. Due to needing to keep our meeting
time to about 90 minutes we skipped some of the material but told everyone
where they could find it on their own.
One can see why going in person at least once and hearing one of these
keynotes can be a temptation. I thought Jobs got interuppted by applause
almost as much as a President at his State of the Union speech. I guess this
would be a State of the Apple speech...
As was said more than once, it makes you want to run out and buy
everything he demonstrated. And what do you think got the loudest, most
sustained applause? His announcement that everyone in the room got a free
copy of Keynote. You'da thought he'd said a bar of gold....
Comment was made on this list recently that by waiting for the Apple DVD
and viewing it then it would be "old news." I don't agree. I think there's a
lot to be said for experiencing the crowd, the slick presentation, getting
the Big Picture, sensing the enthusiasm, hearing Steve Jobs' excitement over
where Apple is (to hear him say that the industry still hasn't caught up
with the Titanium Powerbook introduced two years ago so what are they going
to do NOW is a great moment) and hearing all the exciting news. So I'd say
give it some serious consideration, and if you don't want to devote a UG
program to it, organize an informal viewing party in someone's home, make
up some refreshments, kick back and watch it that way. It's a great
presentation.
