It is with some shock that I read that one of the MUG community's most
staunch supporters of MUGs is no more. Although we haven't had much contact
with C+G, I have heard a lot of good things about them and they are simply
the ones to come out with both great software and great service and support
to the MUG community at large.
C+G will be sorely missed, and I really hope they'll be back soon.
Onwards: there are still some great vendors out there. Marsee Henon from
O'Reilly comes to mind. They never stop flooding us with tonnes of the
latest and greatest Mac books... a few thousand miles away, and they still
do it and we still publish their books for review in our newsletter. This is
a heck of a great vendor, and O'Reilly's doing really well. We've even
recommended them to the local Linux group (where I'm sure that if I continue
this way, the listmum will flag this as [OT]...). ;-)
I'm also sure that Itsamac is a great vendor too. Their support is prompt,
they've some really nice people, and the service is and remains great. These
are some companies I'm sure I can laud without fear of apprehension... I say
this because I've lauded some good services before but they hanged up on me
right after the thank-you/laud/recommendation mail went out. Case in point:
I lauded the local DSL company for their great DSL service. A couple of days
later I found that my DSL connection was lost - I couldn't get on! Also,
checking .Mac often didn't work... (These guys, beginning with the DSL
folks, became a rare case where you had to criticise/curse them in order to
'recommend' them. We are, truly, the other way around on the wrong end of
the Paciifc...) ;-)
But in my own opinion, those vendors are the best ones I've seen - and I'm
equally confident other vendors would be great to work with too.
One needs to recognise that the relationships between vendors and MUGs, in
my totally independent opinion, is that of a two-way street. For every book
they send you, do a review. For every event they sponsor, send them a
thank-you note. (And so on.) Electronical or postal mail, a thank-you note
always makes a difference. I myself have been lagging behind at times but
we're sure we can do better. Encourage your members to order from these
vendors. Make sure they are feeling that this indeed is a two-way street.
