Hey All
I am curious to to find out from other user groups what Mac-focused guest
speaker or companies (vendor reps) you have had present at one of your
meetings? How were you able to get them to come to your meeting?
Thanks!
Trish

Apple Ambassador, Triangle Macintosh User Group
(When you reply, please let us know where you are from. It's interesting to
know how spread out we all are.)
I'm the Special Events Co-ordinator of AUSOM Incorporated -
Australia's Leading Apple Macintosh User Group and while I haven't
been looking after our regular Main Presentations (Special Events
covers things like Swapmeets, Trade Shows, Major Raffles and special
meeting events) I do have a list of presenters we've had for the last
few years.
Apple Computer - They give a Main Presentation 2 or 3 times a year,
normally after a major product announcement. We keep in regular
contact with their Melbourne Office and we offer a standing
invitation and will accommodate them even if they ring the night
before our meeting.
PICA Software - A major Mac Software Distributor here in Oz (They
distribute Aladdin Systems, MacPlay games, Disk Warrior, Think Free
Office, Virex, Nova, Extensis and more) They come along once a year
or so to cover new products. We just drop them an email every now
and again and they respond when they have something interesting.
Symantec - They come along every 12-18 months to talk about their
latest offerings. Again, email them.
Adobe - Come along every November (same month as one of our Swap
meets). Just keep in touch during the during and visit the Adobe
roadshows and chat in person.
We get a ton of local dealers by inviting them along to talk on a
particular topic we think members would be interested in and we know
that the store have the staff and/or products.
We also read various news sources like websites and Australian
Macworld and find what is new and interesting and then find local
distributors/resellers to present.
Most contact starts off with email and then as it progresses maybe
telephone. We explain who we are (Australia's Leading...) with
approx 1,000 Mac members and ask if they'd be interested. We direct
them to view our website (
http://www.ausom.net.au/) which gives more
info on what we do and highlight back issues of our printed magazine
(
http://www.ausom.net.au/magazine.html)
Most suppliers are willing to assist with a presentation and/or
raffle prizes if they feel they'll get something in return for their
"investment and we are lucky enough to have enough members to ensure
they'll have a reasonable sized audience to present to and/or enough
readers to read reviews we write about their products.
Also, if a supplier contacts us and we feel their product won't be
that interesting for a Main Presentation, we are happy to have them
present to one of many Special Interest Groups that may specialise in
that area.
