Hi Alex
When I was Vice-President of my club (pbmug.org), I brought up this issue to
our Board of Directors and they rejected the insurance as too expensive. It
would be 2/3 of our annual dues income.
Recently, the school that we meet at required that we join their group plan
for liability purposes. It costs us abot $400 a year for this.
This doesn't relieve us from a lawsuit, but the schools insurance covers
personal damages ("slip and fall" and the like). Check with the people you use for
your meeting space and see if you could do this, too.
Also, we're good enough Mac guru's to "fix" their computer should they claim
computer damage. We could "self insure" if we had to replace some hardware,
should it be that our advice that caused the problem. We've got so much old
stuff, even if their computer is an SE20, we could repair it without buying
anything.
In our newsletter, and at the meetings, we stress over and over that the
officers and members, and the contributors to this document (and at club meetings)
make every effort to provide correct and timely news. Information presented
in MacBytes, on our web site, and orally at club meetings is taken in good
faith to be accurate. However, neither the club nor the officers can be held
responsible for the certainty of the information provided... Backing up of any and
all data, on a timely basis, is your best insurance.
I have found that most problems are because the user didn't R.T.F.M. (Read
The Fine Manual) and/or used hardware improperly or installed incompatible
software on their system. Like we techies say, "Most issues are P.E.B.K.A.C.
(Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair)."
As a CYA (or CMA, in this case), remember that I am not a lawyer and suggest
that you consult one before making any legal decissions. I'l bet that one of
your AMUG members is an attorney and would be happy to donate their
expertise... maybe you could waive membership dues for them as payment. A wise Rabbi once
said, "Ask and ye shall receive."
Hope this helps.

about hit the floor. It was almost $2000. Before I fork over a large portion
of my budget, I'm curious:
1. Do you carry such insurance? If so, how big is your group and about what
do you pay?
2. Are you aware of any insurance companies either specializing in or at
least catering to non profits at a reasonable price?
