Hey Amaya, all,
When I received the following last week, I thought it was about the
thread here, so I didn't read it right away. When I did, I was
surprised but impressed.
What surprised me was, as you just pointed out Amaya, O'Reilly has a
contest of their own going on right now, and it too has international
restrictions, but because of feedback, they're looking into it.
What impressed me was that not only were they acting on the feedback
they received, but that they let us know they were acting on the
feedback they received, and would let us know the results.
I think we can all understand that Apple, as much as it would like
everyone to think different and to switch (to a Mac), has to work w/in
certain frameworks.
I think what we all would appreciate though is a little
acknowledgment at times that it does hear us and will at least consider
what we're saying, even if the end result is the current status quo.
Sincerely,
Doan Thiel Stafford *

Dear Mac Reader,
One of the issues that has surfaced since we announced the Mac
OS X Innovators contest is item #13 in the eligibility rules
where it says that the competition is open to "legal U.S.
residents living in the continental 48 United States other than
Florida."
I've received some mail inferring that we're thumbing our nose
at the international community by not accepting entries from
outside American borders. This arises at a time when the U.S.
is already at a low point in its popularity within the world
community.
I'm not a political commentator, so I'm not going to discuss
current international tensions. But I do want to address this
contest restriction and give you an update.
For the first contest that is underway (ending on March 28, 2003),
we've worked hard to create an event with a low barrier to entry.
But the "U.S. Resident" clause is not sitting well with some
folks, including myself. I just got off the phone with our legal
counsel discussing what our options are. I've also talked today
with our vice president who oversees this event.
Our lawyer has agreed to research this issue over the weekend,
and if he determines we can lift the restriction, we will do so
immediately.
My experience with lawyers is that they like to rely on language
that they know is safe. Thanks to your letters, and some of them
were even polite, we're pushing back on this restriction.
I want you to know that O'Reilly is committed to running the best
"Mac OS X Innovators" contest possible. And I thank all of you
who have entered, commented, and supported this event.
