I'll try your advice on DHCP however I am not very comfortable changing settings on the PC as it can have disastrous results and hard to restore.

Is it macosxhints.com?

OK, I need a more detailed explanation to make my Mac running Jaguar to be able to see the Windows PC running 2000 Professional, if possible. Thanks.

Actually, the problem is happening with my brother's user account and since he doesn't mind not being able to change his preferences, neither do I and I hope the next erase and install due next month will fix it anyway.

Now, this isn't like I bought a piano and I can't play it because it'll be insulting to say that I can't use a Mac (which is easier to use than a PC) when I have mastered PCs since 1995. Its just that, if the OS does not perform as expected, it isn't my fault but the OS's in the same way those Switchers in the Ads were depicted.

As I mentioned in the review, my father, who is very slow to grasp computers and needs to be told the same commands he uses everyday, found it easier to grasp Mac OS 9 than Mac OS X and I think it's because OS 9 was more consistent in interface. Please don't take up this issue anymore . It's not too important for me anyway :).

I do have a UPS which gives a backup of 20 minutes but power outages are very frequent and very long here (up to a whole day sometimes) and definitely I have to shut my PC (referring to Personal Computer) down safely. Here, the objective of the UPS is not to keep the computer running during a power outage but to let you safely shut it down and it is here that Hibernate comes into play, which allows you to save the environment exactly as it is and restore after the power outage. I would like this feature to exist side-by-side with the Sleep feature which is of course very handy and I do use it a lot.

OSes do have some AI with which they optimize performance, etc. Regarding UI Customization, Windows does let you change the theme (main interface), sounds (I mean sound sets, not the ones in Sound system preference in OS X), mouse cursors, colors, etc. The only thing OS X allows is Desktop pictures. In comparison OS 9 was plenty customizable. Now, telling me that these things aren't useful definitely doesn't justify the point.

It was my mistake to include Safari in the bundled apps but I did not take Safari into count while basing my score because it's in Beta although when it comes to 1.0 I expect it'll be bundled. A disk defragmenter is 100% required especially with OS X as OS X disks are known to fragment much faster than OS 9 disks. Check Norton on this.

Ahem... regarding the System Restore, you are totally misinformed. The type of System Restore that Windows does is very different and I suggest you ask a Windows Millennium or XP using friend how it works and if you don't have such a friend, I'll be glad to explain in my next email.

Thanks for the comments

Karan

Hello fellow MUG members

I have posted a review of Mac OS X v.10.2 Jaguar.

I have some comments.

Networking and Sharing.

1. Your PC cannot access the net via your Mac because you are manually setting the IP. Leave both ethernets as DHCP and with a crossover and you will see the PC pick up a 10.x.x.x IP address.

2. Your PC can see the Mac as you have CUPS installed in Jaguar. Chekc out Macosxhints for detail on SAMBA sharing a printer. It works the other way too - you can attach a printer to the PC and print to it from the Mac.

3. The PC likely can only see the Mac due to a) the protocols being used and b) the order you have your ports in in the Network pane. Mac OS X starts sharing on the first interface by default.

Ownership and Privileges

1. Apply to enclosed folders only works on files and folders that you have the ability to change.

2. The complex problem you have with Permissions? Feel free to email me offlist for resolution hints.

"Hey, it's not my fault"

If I buy a piano and can't make it play music, is it my fault?

Ease of Use and Stability

"OS 9's interface was simply more elegant"

That's a personal preference obviously. More objectively, Mac OS X is easier to get people using the computer be it for simple applications (mail, web, chat) or for more complex ones (imovie). I'm not basing that on my experience - but rather on the experiences of my user group and the reports back on demos that we give to the general public.

"I have never been able to keep Mac OS X running continuously for longer than a week or two because of power outages in this part of the world"

Karan - For the sake of your sanity get a UPS. Trust me on this.

Intelligence

"Windows XP....optimises your applications"

This "feature" makes me want to commit murder. It slows me down any time I use Windows and it's the first feature I turn off....not that it STAYS off or has any sort of "global setting".

"Windows Installers are not as Dumb as Mac OS X Installers"

I contend they are just as dumb. The difference here is that the Windows one is being as smart as it can be. The Mac OS X one is simply being misused - and sadly the biggest offender in this misuse is Apple. The Installer can be more intelligent - it just...isn't being used right.

"OS X's AI"

Gripe - none of these OSes have AI. They do have expert systems to a greater or lesser degree.

Interface Customisation

Actually MS is as open as Apple with regard to interface customisation.

Bundled Apps

Safari is not bundled. It's also a Beta.
Also, do you think you need a disk defragmenter? Why?
Mac OS X has a System Restore application. It's on the installer CD. Check it out.

Missing Features

I'm incredulous that you miss Windows System Hibernate and you don't think that Apple's Sleep in Mac OS X is the greatest thing since sliced bread. For portable users who have switched, this is the number one comment we get back from them. It's amazing they say, it's fantastic they shout, I can't believe it they stammer. That's just weird. On my Windows system (well, my previous employers), I enjoyed waiting the 3 minutes it took for the system to read the RAM contents off the disk and then get itself into the state where it could be usable again. That, and the terrible battery life, made my Windows use HELL (but then it was a DELL).

Switch User. You've got me there. Being able to do that remotely as well as locally would be nice. NeXT could open remote sessions but this is something that has value for me.
