AACUG's MUG NEWS for May 5, 2003:
IMPORTANT: The FTC Wants Your Member's Complaints
-------------------------------------------------
During the course of the FTC Spam Forum last week in Washington,
there were many opportunities to mix with the panelists and
officers from the FTC. They were all very accessible and open
to engaging in conversation with attendees.
At one point, during a break in the lounge, I was able to
chat with FTC Commissioner Mozelle W. Thompson.
I asked:
"Should all our members report spam, and online fraud,
no matter how small or seemingly insignificant?"
He gave me an across-the-board, definitive "Absolutely"!
As I wrote in my editorial "Heads in the sand" last year,
Commissioner Thompson underscored the assertion that while
spam and perceived online fraud is a nuisance which most
users would rather filter and forget -- all occurrences are,
in fact, important in the pursuit of these criminals.
He equated it to unreported rapes, and how it hinders the
efforts of law enforcement to protect the public.
He said YES. Please report it. He encouraged me as
an editor of web sites and publications that reach the
user group community, to pass this information along to
the memberships. I encourage you to do so with yours.
The FTC Consumer Sentinel
-------------------------
The FTC has been compiling a national database of reported spam
and another for online fraud and scams. No matter how small
your claim seems to be they want them ALL.
Through this data, the FTC will be able to establish statistics,
and important criminal profiles on the extent of the crimes.
Being able to show criminal activities affecting users in
various parts of the country will become essential data in the
pursuit and apprehension of these criminals.
* ALWAYS Report Spam to the FTC's email spam database.
Forward your spam to: email@hidden
* ALWAYS Report online fraud or scams to the FTC Consumer Sentinel,
a secure, online database available to hundreds of civil and
criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

Bidders Beware
--------------
51,000 online fraud cases were entered in 2002, and more than half
involved online auction complaints, which has now become the single
largest category of Internet related complaints. For each victim
actually reported, the FTC believes there are four others who didn't
report. Current trends predict there will be 420,000 new auction
victims by the end of 2003.
