In the never-ending quest to keep our large user group afloat, to pay
rent on our office, to pay the rent for our meeting space, etc., we
have to find ways to make a little money. Many user groups have monthly
CDs which are compilations of shareware, updates, etc. that they burn
and then sell to their members at their monthly meetings in an attempt
to provide a service as well as make a few dollars. In the past our
group had CDs pressed in lots of 1000 to sell to our members and to
offer to other user groups at a discount so that they could sell them
if their group was too small to take on such a project.
With the changes in the speed at which updates happen these days, CDs
that are pressed once a quarter or less, that method will no longer
work. We are now looking at a CD/DVD burner that will burn about 25 at
a time. Our CD will have group information, perhaps an electronic
version of our Journal, video tutorials, application updates and the
latest and greatest shareware. We are hoping to charge about $5.00, so
this will hardly be a great money-maker, but a few dollars here and
there certainly help the kitty! Our plans are to offer the first CD in
the next month or two.
It would be wonderful to have Apple updates on the CDs, but I suspect
we can come up with more than enough content to fill the CDs with new
material each month.
