Regarding your question, Mr. Feng, the htaccess file idea is a good
one, but it may not suit you, especially if you do not run apache or
have access to the config file for some reason.
if your MUG runs a php content management system, as many
member-centric sites do, you can almost certainly restrict access to
certain files; this is part of what content management systems are
supposed to do. Check the CMS developers' web site for information and
instructions. Another, more simple solution is to encrypt the actual
files; that is, after someone downloads them, they will THEN be
prompted for a password. There are several cross-platform, though
proprietary, formats that do this, or you could create encrypted
stuffit file. Obviously, neither of these are totally secure, either,
since there are .sit cracking tools available, and content management
systems and their sql databases are often prone to their own security
flaws. I doubt that your MUG's files are that sensitive, however, so I
recommend you try out one or both of these solutions. I wish you well
