Howdy!
This thread includes some great idea's! Here are some of my thoughts on how
I went from wanting to do everything, to fading into the background.
1. Start asking members to do small tasks, setting up chairs, geting the AV
in place, taking attendence, clean up afterward. If they do a good job, ask
them if they would continue to do the job next month. Watch them and see
who continues to do a good job, ask others to take over from anyone who does
a poor job.
2. After several months of doing the job, ask them to switch to something
else, preferably something a little harder/taking more time. Then get a new
person to take over the old job.
3. As people continue to do well, ask them to attend board meeting. *BTW,
board meeting should be short! Never more than an hour, if possible*
Anyone who attends 2-3 board meetings, ask them to become a board member. I
believe you can Never have enough board members. Our board was up to 20
people at one time, before settling to 14 currently.
4. Alternate board officers. Currently at our group, no one can hold the
same officer position for more than 1 year. We also have an advancement
ladder that is often (but not always), a succession from Treasurer, to Vice
President, to President, to Past President, then off the board for at least
one year.
I believe that it is a significant liability to have 1 person doing most of
the work. It creates an atmosphere of either 1: People are there to
being entertained or 2: People feel they are not needed.
I have seen many User Groups die out, simply because 1 person did all the
work, and they either got tired of it, or had to change location/job and
just could not do it anymore. User Groups face a difficult road over the
next few years, we all need to take steps now to make our groups strong
enough to survive.
