By confusion i meant that if I let all users participate and not require a separate membership then no one has their own name, or PM abilities, and it says Unregistered by their name.

having used both phpbb AND Invision Power Board (IPB), I feel that IPB is pretty
much an 'upgrade' from phpbb. lots of features built-in to IPB like file
attachments and calendar which are 'mods' to phpbb and IPB is *easier* to
install than phpbb. IPB is also 'free to use' as a 'unlimited trial version'
which is to say basically the same as phpbb (but they don't make the free option
easy to find on their website:
<http://www.invisionboard.com/download.cgi?subc=trial>) their paid options
involve support, installation, and discounts on various extras. basically FUD.
all in all not worth the cost for me.

but, to address the suggestion, phpbb is no better than IPB in that both require
separate user registration and both allow posting of messages in the same
manner. as far as the 'confusion' I don't understand how a chat room is gonna be
any better, keeping track of a conversation would seem to be just as 'confusing'
in a chat room as in phpbb/IPB. have you tried Private Message on these boards?
'PMing' might reduce the confusion.

and to address the point, we discussed this at a UGU in the past year. these
types of boards usually lie fallow, unused, because people see no reason to use
them unless there is a REALLY ACTIVE core community using them. kind of a
chicken and egg thing.

Chris,
We are in the process of setting up our member forums and we are using
phpBB, which is open source.

What is phpBB?
phpBB is a high powered, fully scalable, and highly customizable open-source
bulletin board package. phpBB has a user-friendly interface, simple and
straightforward administration panel, and helpful FAQ. Based on the powerful
PHP server language and your choice of MySQL, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL or
Access/ODBC database servers, phpBB is the ideal free community solution for
all web sites.

Hi everyone, I want to know what everyone uses for chat/forums on their
group website for your members. We use Invision Power Board for the
forum but most people do not participate since it requires a separate
membership and it gets confusing if you let everyone post messages... I
am looking for a new chat/forum service that I could use maybe a Java
based one like the WWB chat that I could put on my site.

Any recommendations would be great, thanks!
