For best value/location, you can't beat the Mosser Victorian.
I hesitate to give this advice, because I risk ruining things for myself.
But I hate to see folks overpay for hotels in San Francisco.
This is what I do most years when I visit MWX. (I lived in the Bay Area
for 14 years, so I know the area.)
Instead of paying for an expensive hotel in San Francisco, instead stay
in an inexpensive motel that caters to students, across the bay in
Berkeley. There are a number of inexpensive motels there. (The presence
of the University brings them their business.) Many of them are on
University Avenue. You can often find discount coupons in one of those
throw-away lodging guides that you find in Denny's or MacDonald's along
an Interstate highway. (Though I guess Mac-users can just as well use
PriceLine.)
Since these motels are in Berkeley, they don't jack up their prices
because MWX is going on. In fact, they probably have no idea what MWX is.
When you wake up in the morning, all you have to do is walk to either the
East Berkeley or Berkeley Main BART (that's the subway) station.
Whichever is closest. (Or you can grab the bus, which comes about every
10 minutes during commute hours, to the BART station. Buses to BART have
a special blue sign on them.) For a few dollars BART will wisk you
through the tube under the bay and take you right to SF and drop you off
two short blocks away from Moscone Center where MWX is being held.
Reverse the process at the end of the day.
A side benefit of this is that Berkeley has a bunch of really nice ethnic
places to eat dinner, just as SF does. The difference is that the
restaurants in Berkeley are priced to be acceptable to starving students;
not rich SF tourists.
Just another option for the froogle.
Have fun!
