Hi Lesa,
Here's how BeiMac does it.
Yes, annual event "Mac Day" as of this year. That special yearly event is on
hiatus all next year as next year's meetings are all longer and more
Mac-cultural, Mac's 20th Anniversary is the big thing.

we're thinking of a point system where those who give a lot to the group get
a lot of goodies back. If we were ever to charge, the membership fee would
be the first freebie.

point system, we're planning on it.
Also, as our group government is democratic and member-centric to the core,
if there's a quorum of 10% of the members who think a member should get
honourary membership, and if they call a vote and that gets a majority in
favour, leadership takes it - and hands over honourary membership. Right now
that theory has a few loopholes but we're patching it.

magazines, Apple freebies (pins and so on) and plenty of O'Reilly books. :-)
