Here in Tyler, TX, (two hrs. east of Dallas) we have a Cox Communications
Call Center. It opened last year and is the nerve center of a four-state
region for providing for and monitoring internet services, network
operations and providing telephone tech support for cable TV and internet
services (cable modems and dial-up). A number of these Cox call centers
exist throughout the country, and of course companies besides Cox have their
own such operations, too.
On Sept. 23 our user group program was a tour of this 60,000 sq. ft. call
center. It made for a really great evening, very fascinating and eye-opening
about what it takes to provide internet services on such a scale and
especially what it takes to monitor and troubleshoot the systems 24/7.
One of the most interesting parts of the evening was to hear the Cox
representative talk about what SPAM means from their perspective. It's
amazing (sobering) what they have to do to deal with it, and how expensive
it is. And perhaps one of the most honest and insightful comments was this:
"I don't think we'll ever solve this with technology; it will have to be
solved with legislation." (Even that is very hard, as we know.)
I recommend such a program if your town has something like this. Even a
comparatively small (localized) ISP installation might make for an
interesting event. And if you'd like to see a photo album of our own
evening, you are invited to view our website and follow the obvious link.
