Many of us User Group leaders have (or keep) AOL accounts as a way of Tech
support for members and as legacy hold-overs from back in the day when AOL
used to be a fun part of the Internet experience. AOL pretty much has been
riddled with Spam to the point that it is almost unusable.
AOL9s e-mail program was always a closed system and except for a abandoned
program called Claris Emailer, there was no way to access mail from AOL
other than signing on to AOL or checking it via a Web Browser until now.
AOL quietly opened up their Mail protocols earlier this month to allow
programs like Entourage, Eudora, Apple Mail, and others to allow users to
check their AOL accounts via IMAP. I am hoping that now I can use SpamSeive
(I am currently testing for a User Group Review) to help filter some the
Spam that clogs AOL9s mail.
If you are on AOL go to Keyword: Open Mail Access
More Details on how to do it are here: <
http://www.macnightowl.com/>
Quoting from AOL's Help information on the subject, here's what the AOL
members among you need to do:
"The incoming e-mail server is an IMAP server. You will need to ensure that
your e-mail application supports the IMAP protocol and will have to select
IMAP at some point during the setup process.
"The outgoing e-mail server is an SMTP server. The SMTP server requires
authentication, and will have to select this feature at some point during
the setup process. Using an authenticated SMTP server means that in order to
send e-mail you must log in the SMTP server with a user name and password.
The user name and password are the same as your AOL screen name and
password. In addition, you need to change the outgoing mail (SMTP) port
number to 587.
"Incoming e-mail server address: imap.aol.com.
"Outgoing e-mail server address: smtp.aol.com."
One more thing: If you're accessing your AOL account from another service,
such as a broadband connection, you can leave the SMTP settings alone. Just
stick with the ones you have.
