Below is a copy of an article I placed on the Australian Mac Users Group
site recounting a recent experience. I thought with Xmas approaching that it
was good to remember why we all probably got involved with Mac User Groups
and that reason was to help others. Sometimes inter group politics get in
the way and some groups become insular but it really is so much better when
we all work together.

Sometimes it's easy to overlook the great work being done by some of
Australia's Mac User Groups to help people in need. It's not all about the
money it's more about that good feeling you get inside after helping someone
in need. Well you know what's better than that feeling? A group of Mac User
Groups working together to help someone. Below is a recent occurrence that
symbolizes what I mean.
An invalid old age pensioner who was wheelchair bound had very little to
look forward to. Her old Apple IIc running AppleWorks (to organise her
recipe collection built up over many years) was one of her few pleasures.
However when one of her grandchildren accidently bent and destroyed her copy
of AppleWorks she was devastated. Where could she find a replacement 5.25
inch floppy disk.
The first smart thing she did was to contact Apple. Apple doesn't
support software this old but they did give her the contact details for the
local Mac User Groups in Sydney. The first two she contacted said they
wouldn't be able to help her but when she got to the Sydney Mac Users Group
her prayers were answered.
Just for a bit of background info I run both the Sydney Mac Users Group
as well as the Australian Mac Users Group and thought the best thing to do
was to put this request into their hands
Now in my position running the Australian Mac Users Group I keep in
contact with and monitor the activities of all the various Australian Mac
User Groups, I thought about it for a while and decided the Western
Australian Mac Users Group's email list would be a great place to start.
They have a large membership which is very active and always willing to
offer help. Well I wasn't disappointed.
I was bombarded by offers with a number of members pulling their old
computers out of cupboards, attics and other assorted places and testing
their old disks. It was amazing the number that still worked. They also knew
to ask all the right questions to ensure she got the exact version she
needed. Eventually I found a member who actually lives in Tasmania with the
right version. He made some copies and posted them to the lady in Sydney.
She just rang me & the disks have arrived, she can access all her
recipes and her old Apple IIc has a future again. Best of all was the
satisfaction hearing her close to tears because of what had been done for
her. This is a great example of what can be achieved when Australian Mac
User Groups work together. The monetary value is minimal but the
satisfaction felt is priceless.
Best Wishes To All
Greg Sharp
