We've had no status for years, simply b/c someone thought they had
non-profit status, but didn't keep up on any paperwork. Our original
bank account was set up under a tax id number that no longer exists, so
we created a new Tax ID number (easy online process which is
immediate), and opened our new account w/ the Tax ID number.
The feedback that I've heard from local professionals here who know
about non-profit, and they've said that until we've got 100 members
with several $1000 dollars a year in money in & out, that it's not
worth the hassle.
Getting a tax ID number doesn't put you in any status. Just make sure
that you at least have your user group registered with the state as a
DBA, & use that name in the tax ID registration. If you register as
non-profit, you don't need to supply any ssn number.
So our status now is that we are registered as a DBA, have a tax ID
number & don't plan on going non-profit unless we're forced to.
Cheers!
