I wonder...are we alone in being most successful with the over-40 crowd?
I would say not. The Serious Macintosh User Group (Bloomington, IN, USA)
is a community MUG that meets on the campus of Indiana University. There
are many Mac users on campus, and many of them are students under the age
of 25. We've gotten one or two of them to meetings on occasion. I'm the
youngest active member, at 27 (I'm a graduate student).
Interestingly enough, several times since I've been here people have tried
to start an on-campus MUG for students, and it has never worked. Someone
is trying it again this spring, so we'll see what happens. My belief is
that the students interested in computers are already in a community
(likely online), and those that aren't have other interests. Joining a MUG
just isn't high on anyone's list of fun social activities.
To be fair though, we don't spend much effort attempting to recruit them
because their needs would be so different from those of our current
members (mostly older community members: retirees, business owners, a few
academics), and we don't have the organizational resources to serve two
such different groups.
Later,
John A. Johnson
