I would have to agree with what most people are saying here on the topic.
Our group used to a program called iKids that put used Macs into low-income
households. The program worked great. Our group decided that the machine
needed to run at least OS 8 and have 32mb of ram. The program soon grew to
where the county and local "community work day" program hold a computer
recycle event every six months. What we see come in is mostly schools
getting rid of equipment and people who have upgraded. This past event we
had about 15 G3 computers come in and were able to send out about 8 of them.
The rest of the equipment gets loaded onto a shipping container and sent off
island. So we have been lucky in not having to deal with storage issues.
On a side note, I am glad to hear about so many groups doing programs like
this. I am glad to see groups involved in their communities. I think it
would be a great idea for these "Community Giving Back" programs to be on a
webpage. A one stop shop for UG community programs. I think if this
resource was available to the community as a whole it would be great
benefit. A webpage can offer other groups trying to start similar programs
a guide to help them. Maybe save them from some of the growing pains. I am
willing to do some leg work on this if there is an interest. Let me know.
