Hi Gary,
A few things that I hope you might find helpful:
iTunes 4.2 is a little "thirstier" than its predecessor. It only requires
a min. 400 Mhz G3 or G4, QT 6.2x or later; however, your system bus may
not be quite enough. Before anything, I'd suggest removing all traces of
your previous version (library, prefs, etc.) and saving just the music
files, themselves (you can add back after your reinstall) and then
repairing your permissions using the Disk Utility. If you have it, run
DiskWarrior as well to be sure that everything is in good order. I'd then
do a fresh install of 4.2 and see where that gets you.
I have seen it work well on older revision iMacs, but only with 512 Mb
RAM or more (although it *should* work). You can get a 512 stick for
under under 100 bucks from a number of dealers. If you are attending
MWEsf, you can usually find a great deal from a vendor on the show floor.
If you are using Panther, I would definitely recommend upping your RAM
anyway for best results.
Best regards and happy new year!
Dan

I restart my iMac indigo 500 (384 megs RAM) and try again... It crashes.
