May I suggest that you are looking at the issue from too low?
if instead, as a fund-raiser, you were to have one of the more talented
members design a slick MUG logo with "2004" in it - and then get one or
two nice "bomber-style" jackets made...

I agree. TMUG tried this with a membership of 200+ and flopped big
time. We
then went for logoed ball caps and sold 10 of the 50 we had to buy. We
even put
up a page of reverse image logos in various sizes that members could
download
and iron on to shirts. The only success we've had is when we started
to offer
a free raffle ticket for each logoed item a member wears to a meeting.
Including a logoed ball cap in each raffle helped some.
