We have membership dues at MacPeople of Gainesville, FL, and for many
years had a tough time getting many of those that attended the
meetings to join. Something we did this year has changed all that. In
the last 6 months we added a raffle at each meeting. Items raffled
off have included Apple branded hats and mugs, all kinds of software,
a used G4 computer, an external hard drive, etc. The trick was we
offer more tickets per dollar for paid up members than those that are
not, and by offering a deal on tickets for members, the raffles have
greatly improved the ratio of members vs non-members. I thought for
sure we would lose money on the raffles, but after 6 months, we've
made a few hundred dollars, plus a major gain in our group bank
account due to lots of new members.
We take great care to find deals on items most of our group would be
interested in winning, and that helps the bottom line.

I have a quick question about dues. It hasn't gotten any cheaper to run a
group, but I have noticed that some groups are modifying their dues because
they believe it has an impact on memberships.
Some give students a discount in order to increase youth members. Some have
gone dues-free to compete with internet groups. So, I wonder if people think
dues makes a difference? Does your group have folk that avoid paying
the few $ a
year? Give students a break?
