Washington Apple Pi will be sponsoring its Annual December Computer
Show and garage Sale on December 4th of this year. On the other hand we
are NOT holding a similar event that has traditionally been held in
June.
The December event gets a good response from vendors and the public. It
is held in a community college gymnasium in order to provide enough
room for the 75 or so tables that we typically sell. Table prices are
kept low to encourage everyone who wants to sell something to take
part. We do not get participation by local merchants or resellers. The
vendor group seem to mainly small entrepreneurs. I do not know what
these people do at other times of the year.
Our volunteers run a simple lunch counter and there are door prize
drawings using a random number drawing program written for the purpose.
There is also a consignment area where the Pi takes a cut of the sale
price. People can get on-the-spot service on their out-of-warranty
equipment at our hardware clinic desk. The Pi asks for a modest
donation from people who are helped in this way.
All in all it makes for quite a lively day.
I suppose the bottom line in this discussion thread is "Does the event
make money." At the present time, we expect it to based on past
experience. Between now and December 4th we will be looking at ways to
dress the event up a little bit and to bring in some new interests.
John D. Barnes
Vice-President for Programs, Washington Apple Pi.
