And anecdotes...
One member arrived to a meeting in a "steamed" condition,
obviously coming to complain about something...
The month before he had picked up the first of our
"Fonts" discs which were for the LaserWriter.
(This was at the dawn of "smooth" fonts, only a dozen or
so available online for download.)
He was called for his question during Q&A and stood up to
proclaim that the Fonts discs didn't work. There was a hush
over the gathering.
Another member asked: "Which fonts?" (We had some 30 discs
of bitmapped fonts in the library! 400K)
Then, the PD Librarian (Michael Brodsky at the time)
asked the pivotal question:
"How did you install the fonts?"
Turns out the member loaded JUST the suitcases, and NOT
the postscript downloadable files... so he got ONLY
jaggy screen fonts.
Once he understood the idea that ALL the files were
necessary he was a happy camper.
The next month he returned to the meeting, having purchased
Fontastic -- to show off his OWN font "Architect" fashioned
after the lettering on architectural plans. It was swell,
and he offered to add it to the collection. It was uploaded
and distributed far and wide.
Some time later a font appeared on the scene from another
font developer called "Tekton" which was amazingly similar
to our member's original freeware donation. Coincidence?
Maybe. Parallel development? Maybe.
But, you see, sometimes the "intangibles" of UG membership are
unseen, and in most cases are almost impossible to detect
later -- but they are REAL BENEFITS indeed -- to a much
larger community than just that one member that night.
:-)
Fred
I just wish I could remember that fellow's name.
