Hi folks -- I'm new to the list, and it's good to be aboard. I'm not
currently running a user group, but I founded the U. of MN group when I was
a student there, and am involved with many things Macintosh currently.
I have some suggestions for cool GarageBand demos at user group events:
(1) If you have members who are already using GB, why not have them bring in
songs they've created with GB and demo them for the group? If you're
daring, you could have an American Idol type of them and vote on the best
songs.
(2) If you have any musicians (especially guitar players or keyboardists) in
the group, think about coordinating with them for a demo that works
something like the one Steve Jobs did at Macworld. Lay down a quick set of
tracks you've thought about ahead of time, and then have the musician jam
over the final product.
(3) Do the demo at the beginning of the group, showing people how to browse
loops, insert them in the project, etc. Then, pass around a Powerbook or
iBook with GarageBand on it (and a pair of headphones!), and let any number
of users have 3 to 5 minutes to add whatever they like to a new GarageBand
project. At the end of the meeting, see what you've got! Kind of like the
old game where you sit in a circle and whisper a story into your neighbor's
ear, and so on until the story returns to the first person in the circle.
But much cooler. (extra sauce: if anyone has an Oxygen 8 or other really
compact MIDI keyboard, pass that along with the powerbook/ibook and let
people use the software instruments).
I hope some of these are helpful. I also hope you will allow me to be so
bold as to plug a GarageBand-related site I help run
(
http://www.macjams.com). We have a great little community where folks can
post their songs and receiving comments on them, and we also feature the
usual news, discussion forums, reviews, and related content about
GarageBand. If any of you publish print newsletters and would like some
GarageBand-related content, we recently created a tutorial on MIDI basics
for GarageBand users that will appear in one user group's newsletter -- we'd
be happy to send it to anyone else wanting to re-publish (it's in MS Word
format with high resolution graphics suitable for printing).
Best of luck!
Miguel Danielson
