people been successful with?
Evan,
Congratulations! Welcome to the community.
a) Raffle items - contact every major and minor software company that
you can find. From Adobe to Matterform to Unsanity. If you burrow
through their pages you can usually find a UG contact. Sometimes I just
go to a site and type in the URL and add "/usergroups." Occasionally
that works. I don't forget you're college-based. Vendors love that!
Look through VersionTracker and find shareware that you think that your
members would be interested in. Contact the author(s), introduce
yourself and explain what you are doing. Sometimes they'll give you a
code to auction off in return for a newsletter review. Remember, small
companies don't have deep pockets for advertising, so generating word
of mouth is god for them (particularly on a college campus).
O'Reilly Press is exceptional on this front. You can request any title
for free so long as you publish a review.
These are just a few tricks that I have learned as a vendor rep over,
lo, these many years. Best of luck.
