This may not be directly relevant but I did want to give you my observation
AND experience
In the past 3+ months I have been receiving many unusual messages.
Set one, message delivery failures indicating that a message 3I had sent2
failed because the addressee was not a working e-mail address or is
blocking mail. In every case, I did NOT know the addressee and had not sent
the message. On 2 occasions, the addressee was unique enough (daughter of a
friend) that I contacted the parents. It turned out that PC computers that
they used had been infected with one of the recent viruses that grabs the PC
e-mail address book and creates messages FROM one of the addresses TO
another of the addresses and includes the virus as an attachment. Much of
the current glut of e-mail is the result of a virus taking over the computer
of someone you know that has your e-mail in their address book. As far as I
know, PC computers are the sole source of the messages but we Mac people
either get the messages OR the failure to deliver messages.
You may be able to make a connection of the message addresses to alert a PC
friend of the contamination of their PC.
Set two, I received 2 messages from ???@mac.COM (I don9t remember the
address) that purported to be from Apple9s administration of .mac accounts.
The message said that .Mac mail was going to be shut down for several days
but a special web based service would available and the 3attachment2 would
give information AND the application. Included was the password to open the
zip file that was attached.
This was a current PC virus / worm that was well documented with warnings
about opening Zip files that had a password. Apparently the virus checkers
can NOT identify encrypted files.
The fact that the message purported to be from .Mac was either an accident
or an indication that the criminals hav figured out how to go after the
Apple computer base
