Regarding the .Mac account and SPAM...
I've had a .Mac account for a couple of years now, and I'm sure that my
account gets some Spam - though I NEVER see it. Why?
Because I took the time to setup and USE the SPAM filter in Apple's
MAIL.
Most modern mail programs have spam filters and RULES that you can set
to keep unwanted mail from littering your email box.
All it takes is a little "training" (Read the "Help" in Mail about the
Junk filter) it's EASY to set up.
I get a little laugh out of all the complaints about SPAM that folks
receive - and the blame that gets attached to the email application
programmer or the hosting service for it - most services (including
apple) filter a good chunk of the mail - its up to YOU as individual
email clients to set your own requirements as to what you will accept
(or not)
turn on training in the Junk Filter and start training it - and after 3
or 4 weeks - set it to 'Automatic'...easy as pie.

Has anyone else noticed a dramatic increase in Spam (and I'm talking
about the worst kind) in the last three weeks?
Louise, consider yourself very lucky! My .Mac account gets 5 - 10
pieces of spam a day. BUT my ilenesmachine accounts that USED to be on
my web pages... phew...
I ONLY use OS X Mail to receive mail because the filters are SO great.
I check the box once a month now, because they've been totally
co-opted. Last night there were almost 7000 pieces of mail in it; and
only 5 were legitimate mail!
